Byzantine Kelli, Monastery of Xenophon

Photogrammetric documentation of a two-storey stone kelli at the Monastery of Xenophon, Mount Athos, to support a full restoration study — fully georeferenced orthomosaics of every planar surface.

Brief

A two-storey stone kelli (monastic cell) belonging to the Monastery of Xenophon, Mount Athos, was surveyed in June 2026 on behalf of EETAA S.A. — Hellenic Agency for Local Development — to support a full restoration study of the building. Given its location within the Athonite monastic community, the exact site is withheld here.

Method

A reference network was established by GNSS, with a total station used to observe additional ground-control points across the building. Aerial imagery was captured with a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise RTK; terrestrial imagery of the ground floor and lower surfaces was captured with a Nikon Z6 III fitted with a 14 mm rectilinear lens.

Around 3,600 images were processed in Agisoft Metashape, converging with a mean reprojection error of 1.6 px and a ground sampling distance generally below 1 mm across the capture set.

Deliverables

Fully georeferenced orthomosaics were produced for every planar surface of the building at 2 mm/pixel, then brought into AutoCAD as the geometric base for the restoration drawings.
